Mariners bats provide fireworks in 8-1 win
The Seattle Mariners offense exploded for 8 runs against the Detroit Tigers today allowing the Mariners to salvage one game of this series with the 8-1 win. Cliff Lee pitched another great game, going 8 innings and fanning 11 Tigers to tie his personal career high. Lee, who along with Ichiro were named to the [...]
Phillies May Not Have The Players To Cope With Recent Injuries
When Phillies’ All-Star second baseman Chase Utley went down with a thumb injury, the Phillies’ offense took a huge hit. At the time of the injury, Utley was hitting .277/.383/.466 for the Phillies who currently sit in 3rd place in the NL East.

Stephen Strasburg appears to chew tobacco, BJ Upton doesn't bother to run
7/4, Phil Mushnick: "Thursday, during Mets-Nationals, SNY's Kevin Burkhardt delivered an extensive report about how the Nats are being extremely protective of new pitching star Stephen Strasburg,
No end in sight (part 1)
Thousands of baseball books have been published. Millions of baseball stories have been told, every one of them starts with the same basic understanding: two teams, nine innings, balls, strikes, runs, hits and errors. Along the way there are various twists and turns ending in perfect games, no hitters, walk off home runs and everything [...]
Orioles Lose to Jon Lester and the Sox (again); Juam Samuel Goes Batty
On Saturday night, the Orioles lost for the 56th time in 80 chances as Jon Lester and the Boston Red Sox dominated them, 9-3. Lester, the tall southpaw for Boston, upped his record 12-0 against the Orioles lifetime as he went seven innings and allowed only one run. He won fairly easy as his offense hammered Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie who lost his tenth game of the season, along with an ineffective bullpen. Guthrie was not sharp at all and he lasted a tad over four ...
Posada leaves game with sprained left ring finger, x-rays negative
Update (4:49pm): Posada is day-to-day with a sprained left ring finger. X-rays were negative. Well that’s good news.
2:33pm: Jorge Posada left today’s game in the 7th inning after being hit by a foul tip off his left (glove) hand. Looked like his fingers bent back pretty far on the replay. We’ll update this post with [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog
Game 81: Beat Canada
As I said on Friday, I find it amusing that for the second straight year the Yankees play the Blue Jays at home. I suppose one team has to face Canada’s own today, but it’s interesting that it’s the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, what with all the stars and stripes and George Steinbrenner’s birthday.

Cano, Jeter named All Star starters
Robbie Cano and Derek Jeter were named the AL’s starting middle infield for this year’s All Star Game in Anaheim. The rest of the AL starting nine consists of Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Evan Longoria, Ichiro, Josh Hamilton, Carl Crawford, and Vlad Guerrero. Can’t say I disagree with any of those picks.
CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes, [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog
Thames activate, Huffman optioned to Triple-A
Out just about a month with a hamstring issue, Marcus Thames returns from the disabled list today to give the Yankees a little bit of pop off the bench and in the designated hitters spot. Unsurprisingly, Chad Huffman was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the roster since he’s basically a lesser version of [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog
Yanks win in a Fourth of July walk-off
One year ago today, Jorge Posada hit a walk-off single on Independence Day to give the Yankees a win over the Canadian Blue Jays. Once again on Independence Day, this time after Jorge left the game with a sprained ring finger, the Yankees walked off against their foreign rivals. It was Marcus Thames today, delivering [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog
Heathcott goes deep on Independence Day
One more bullet pointer on American’s birthday…
Triple-A Scranton won. Jesus Montero singled and walked twice, Reid Gorecki doubled twice, and Greg Golson had four hits. Juan Miranda had three hits and launched his second bomb in three days since coming off the disabled list. He needs to come up to platoon at DH with Marcus [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog
Open Thread: America, F**k Yeah!
Enjoy the nation’s birthday everyone, and for the love of Mo, be careful. Leave the big stuff to the pros. Ten fingers is decided advantage in life.

July 4th Trades
Jeff Shaw was a two-time All Star and one of my favorite players growing up. The right-hander was a brilliant setup man with Cincinnati, positioning Jeff Brantley for 44 saves and the 1996 Rolaids Relief Man Award. The following season, however, Brantley got injured and Shaw moved into the closer’s role. He closed out 42 [...]
Coco Crisp Lifted From Sunday's Game Vs. Indians
Coco Crisp was lifted from Sunday's 3-1 win over the Indians in the middle of the second inning with ligament pain near his left hamstring and groin area, but the A's outfielder said he plans on being back in the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the visiting Yankees.Athletics Official Site
Colby Rasmus 2009 Vs. 2010
I wanted to do a quick post investigating Colby’s success this year compared to last year at the plate. I dug through the pitch f/x data and came up with a couple of observations. First he’s hitting fastballs from RHers with much more authority this year (a 0.589 wOBAc compared to a 0.346 wOBAc in 2009). Second he’s crushing the pitch middle in as shown in the following chartPlay A Hard Nine
